All-Wheel Drive 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, as a WRC homologation model

Developed as a direct response to Toyota’s World Rally Championship programme, the GR Yaris is not a conventional performance hatchback, but a purpose-built homologation model engineered with competition intent at its core. Conceived in collaboration with Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division, it represents one of the most focused driver’s cars produced in recent years.

Unlike the standard Yaris, the GR variant shares little beyond its name. The platform combines elements from multiple Toyota architectures, with a widened track, bespoke suspension, and lightweight construction incorporating aluminium panels and a carbon composite roof. The result is a compact, rigid structure designed to accommodate performance rather than practicality.

At its centre is a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing approximately 257–261 horsepower and 360Nm of torque, delivered through a six-speed manual transmission. Power is distributed via Toyota’s GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, capable of varying torque split depending on driving conditions, providing exceptional traction and adaptability.

Performance is immediate and engaging. With a 0–62 mph time of around 5.5 seconds and a relatively low kerb weight of approximately 1,280kg, the GR Yaris delivers a driving experience that is both responsive and deliberate. The chassis, developed with rally conditions in mind, offers composure across varying surfaces, reinforcing the car’s intended purpose beyond conventional road use.

Externally, the GR Yaris presents a compact and purposeful form. Short overhangs, widened arches, and a lowered roofline distinguish it from the standard model, with each element contributing to aerodynamic efficiency and structural integrity rather than visual excess.

The interior remains focused and functional. While more restrained than traditional performance offerings, it centres the driver, with clear instrumentation and supportive seating, emphasising control over comfort.
